Will robots really take away humans’ jobs? At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, a human-like robot named ‘Ameca’ was asked the question, and its response was both surprising and thought-provoking as it replied: “I don’t know—how good are you at your job?”

Ameca, created by the British firm Engineered Arts, is described as the world’s most advanced humanoid robot. At the event, it was seen wearing a black dress, red cardigan, white trainers, and a necklace. Although Ameca cannot walk yet, it can listen to people’s questions and respond intelligently.

Engineered Arts states that Ameca is still in its development phase and is currently available for hire at events and exhibitions. While its responses are limited, it signals the growing potential of automation in various professions.

Which Jobs Are At Risk?

According to a study, jobs that require years of training and qualifications – such as cardiovascular technicians, sound engineers, and nuclear medicine technologists – are at greater risk of being automated. However, roles involving physical labour, such as pile-driver operators and dredge operators, are less likely to be affected.

How Many Jobs Will Be Lost?

A report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) suggests that 22% of jobs may be at risk due to AI in the near future, with some being completely eliminated. However, AI is also expected to create 78 million new jobs, replacing 92 million lost jobs, ultimately leading to a net creation of 170 million new opportunities.
