A total of 36 men in China province reportedly took out hefty mortgages worth millions of dollars after having brief romantic relationships — with the same woman. The woman in Shenzhen allegedly tricked them and pretended to be their girlfriend while persuading them to purchase properties in a nearby city before disappearing. The scammer identified herself as Liu Jia to each of the guys and tricked them into buying apartments in Huizhou, Guangdong TV reported.

Huizhou is located in southern Guangdong province and is roughly 90 km from Shenzhen. Liu has been identified as a 30-year-old from the province of Hunan who works in the e-commerce sector in Shenzhen. One of the victims, named Atao, claimed that he fell in love with Liu after meeting her on an online dating site in March 2024.

He added that at least 36 working men in their 30s had fallen for the same scam and had barely dated Liu for a month or two. Atao claimed that he believed Liu to be “tender, virtuous, family-oriented, and considerate,” and immediately fell for her.

She brought up marriage after a month of dating and asked that Atao purchase a home before they could meet his parents or move in together. According to Atao, Liu “strongly recommended” two blocks in Huizhou, Jiu Jing Tai and Hao Yi Shang Yuan.

She was also willing to pay 30,000 yuan (US $4,000/Rs 3.3 lakh) out of her own money to help him with the down payment.

Atao eventually purchased an apartment in one of the two blocks, but Liu declined to have her name added to the certificate of home ownership.

She began to get distant towards Atao after he completed the house-buying procedure. Atao stated that she could not be contacted after this. He claims to have to pay a 4,100 yuan (US$560/Rs 48k) monthly home loan, rent in Shenzhen, and expenditures for his parents, which puts pressure on his finances. Wang, a different victim, claimed that Liu applied the same method of scam to him.

Wang claimed that “Liu Jia refused to meet” him after he purchased the property, citing her busy schedule as an excuse. “She blocked me from calling her and deleted me from her contact list,” he said. All of the properties were reportedly situated in the Hao Yi Shang Yuan and Jiu Jing Tai residential complexes.
