Britain’s longest-serving prisoner in solitary confinement, Robert Maudsley, has gone on a hunger strike after authorities confiscated his personal belongings including a PlayStation, television, books and a music system, Mirror UK reported. The 71-year-old, also known as “Hannibal the Cannibal,” has been held in a specially built glass cell at Wakefield Prison for over 46 years.
Maudsley’s brother, Paul Maudsley, 74, revealed that Robert is angry over the removal of his items and has stopped eating in protest.
“For some reason, the main prison went back to normal after the operational exercise, but Bob’s section was out for a couple of days. Bob complained and he’s normally polite, but the prison officers accused him of being abusive. When he finally got back in his cell, they had taken everything – his TV, PlayStation, books and radio,” Paul told Mirror UK.
As per the report, Maudsley’s hunger strike started after the operational exercise on February 26. Authorities searched the prison after reports of a smuggled gun and removed inmates from their cells. When Maudsley returned, he found his belongings missing.
Paul said losing these items has been difficult for Robert as he used his games, books and TV to keep himself occupied.
“He’s back to how he was 10 years ago when he didn’t have anything to stimulate him and he would just sit there and vegetate and was in danger of going mad. He loves playing war games and chess on his PlayStation and he’s always watching old films on TV and reading factual books,” he said.
Since then, Robert has refused food and has also stopped calling his family. “He called me from prison that day, and he sounded angry and anxious. He told me, ‘I’m going on hunger strike, so don’t be surprised if this is the last time I call you’,” his brother said.
Paul said the family has been trying to get answers but has had no luck. “We can’t get through to anyone to find out what’s going on, and we are very concerned.” Paul believes Robert’s phone access has also been removed.
“Bob is 71 now so we don’t know how long he will be able to survive without food,” he added.
For over four decades, Robert has lived alone in an 18ft by 15ft glass cell at Wakefield Prison. He was first imprisoned in 1974 at the age of 21 for murdering John Farrell, a man convicted of child abuse. However, while serving his sentence, he went on to kill three more prisoners who had been convicted of violent crimes such as rape and child abuse.
After the killings, he reportedly told a prison officer, “There’ll be two short on the roll call.” He was then deemed too dangerous to be kept with other inmates. Since then, he has remained in complete isolation and became the longest-serving prisoner in solitary confinement in the UK.
