India men’s T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav lavished high praise for his ODI counterpart Rohit Sharma on Saturday (March 8), saying he was a ‘natural’, ‘clean-hearted’ and ‘very honest’ leader, who allows others to grow with him. Suryakumar also backed India to win Sunday’s 2025 Champions Trophy final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Rohit has led India to its third ICC men’s white-ball tournament final in as many years. India failed to win the 2023 World Cup, losing to Australia in the summit clash, but beat South Africa to clinch the 2024 T20 World Cup. If India were to win on Sunday, Rohit will become only the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni with multiple ICC titles to his name.
“He is very natural and instinctive,” Surya said at the ‘India Today Conclave’, as quoted by PTI. “Whatever he does he keeps others in front and watches others grow. He is an easily approachable man. He always raises his hand and say I will do this for you. He is very natural on and off the field, clean-hearted, very honest.”
Suryakumar also feels that under Rohit and head coach Gautam Gambhir, the dressing room environment has attained a relaxed confidence, which makes them favorites for the final.
“The camaraderie and trust which is seen on the ground among the players, most importantly the dugout is relaxed. When you see the dugout is relaxed, that means something right is happening inside. India is winning the final tomorrow, it’s simple. India has been playing an amazing brand of cricket for the last two years and they should just be themselves,” he stated.
The now Mumbai Indians and former Kolkata Knight Riders batter also spoke about Gambhir and how he’s not always perceived correctly in the media.
“When I was with KKR, he always spoke to me about leadership, how to carry on the field, what to do off the field, may be a better captain. I have learnt a lot from him, he is a very smart man,” Suryakumar said. “He is a normal guy. Off the field, he does not say anything, does not utter any single word, no reaction. He is a good man.”
The T20 skipper also advised the ODI stars to be ‘fearless’ and play aggressive cricket in the final.
