Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma entered his name in the history books on Tuesday (March 4) by becoming the first skipper in the world to reach the final of all four ICC events. Rohit led India to the final of the World Test Championship in June 2023, the ODI World Cup in November 2023, the T20 World Cup in June 2024, and now the Champions Trophy in March 2025.

MS Dhoni led India to T20 World Cup finals in 2007 and 2014, the ODI World Cup final in 2011, and the Champions Trophy final in 2013 but never got a chance to play in the World Test Championship final. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson led the Kiwis to the final of the ODI World Cup in 2019, the World Test Championship in June 2021, and the T20 World Cup in November 2021, but during his time as captain, New Zealand never managed to qualify for the Champions Trophy final.

Rohit, who became the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to win an ICC trophy in June 2024, will look to win his second ICC trophy on Sunday (March 9) when India takes on the winner of the second semifinal match between New Zealand and South Africa.

Rohit, who became India’s white-ball captain on a full-time basis in November 2021, has won all four matches played so far as Indian skipper in the Champions Trophy 2025. Under his leadership, the world No. 1 ODI team hammered Bangladesh by six wickets in the Champions Trophy opener played in Dubai on February 20, and in the second Group A match against Pakistan, India secured a win by 6 wickets.

India faced New Zealand in the last Group A match in Dubai on Sunday (March 2) and secured a win by 44 runs.

In the semifinal against Australia on Tuesday, the Indian team was asked to chase down a 265-run target, and riding on Virat Kohli’s 84-run knock from 98 balls, India achieved the objective in 48.1 overs for the loss of six wickets.

Apart from Kohli, Shreyas Iyer played an impactful innings of 45 runs, and KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 42 runs. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Karnataka sealed the deal for India by smashing a six on the first ball of the 49th over bowled by Glenn Maxwell.

For his superb show with the bat in the ninth ICC knockout match between India and Australia, Kohli won the Player of the Match award.
