Rohit scored 76 runs from 83 balls for India in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025. For his superb show with the bat in the summit clash, Rohit won the Player of the Match award.

Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma entered his name in the history books on Sunday (March 9) by becoming the first captain in the world to win the Player of the Match award in the Champions Trophy final. Rohit won the top prize for his 76-run knock in the Champions Trophy 2025 final played between India and New Zealand at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

During his stay at the crease in the summit clash against the Kiwis, Rohit faced 83 balls and hammered 7 fours and 3 sixes. He added 105 runs for the first wicket with Shubman Gill (31).

Rohit is overall the fourth captain after Clive Lloyd, Ricky Ponting, and MS Dhoni to win the POTM award in the final of the ICC tournament.

West Indies captain Lloyd won the POTM award in the 1975 World Cup final for scoring 102 runs against Australia at The Lord’s on June 21, 1975. In addition to his century, Lloyd picked up one wicket in that match.

In the 2003 ODI World Cup final played between India and Australia, Ponting won the POTM award for scoring an unbeaten 140 runs.

Dhoni remained unbeaten on 91 runs from 79 balls in the final of the 2011 ODI World Cup and won the POTM award.

India’s four-wicket win in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 also helped Rohit become fifth captain in the world after Lloyd, Ponting, Dhoni and Pat Cummins win multiple ICC trophies.

Lloyd won two ODI World Cup titles (1975, 1979) as West Indies captain, whereas Ponting was the captain of Australian teams that won ODI World Cup titles in 2003 and 2007 and Champions Trophy titles in 2006 and 2009.

Dhoni won the T20 World Cup title as India captain in 2007 and also led the Men in Blue to success in the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Cummins won the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup title as Australia captain in 2023.

Rohit won his first ICC title as India captain in June last year. Under his leadership, India defeated South Africa by seven runs in the 2024 T20 World Cup final played at Kensington Oval on June 29, 2024.
