Pritam reacts to plagiarism claims against BLACKPINK’s Jennie.
Music composer Pritam has finally reacted to plagiarism claims against BLACKPINK’s Jennie. In a lengthy note on Instagram, Pritam backed the K-pop singer, explaining how music similarities are bound to happen. He further wrote that it’s time trolls should stop ‘tearing artists down’ and celebrate their music and work instead.
In his latest Instagram post, Pritam referred to the song, Like Jennie, from the K-pop singer’s recently-launched album, where he said that ‘Rani’ and ‘Jeannie’ are the names that rhyme and it doesn’t necessarily result in a copy.
“Rani and Jennie are names that rhyme, so a similar flow in one phrase doesn’t make it a copy. In music, minor similarities are bound to happen—whether through rhymes, phrasing, or even within the same genre,” he wrote.
Pritam, who has faced his share of plagiarism claims in the past, further added, “Instead of focusing on tiny details, it’s important to see the bigger picture. In today’s interconnected world, where artists share the same platforms, no one is deliberately trying to copy someone else’s work. Creating a song takes immense effort, and if an artist truly resonates with an idea, they can simply collaborate.”
“Music is about creativity, unique artistic perspective, influence, and sometimes pure coincidence—especially when artists exist on the same creative wavelength.
Rather than tearing artists down, celebrating their work makes far more sense,” he further posted. The music composer concluded his note by wishing Jennie all the best for her new album. Here is the post:
What is BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Pritam’s controversy all about?
Jennie, a prominent member of K-pop band BLACKPINK, recently released a promo of a new track from her album titled Like Jennie. Though the small clip was praised by her many fans, Indian listeners felt it sounded quite similar to the Rani theme from Karan Johar’s 2023 film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, featuring Alia Bhatt, composed by Pritam.
Desi fans were quick to point out the similarity of the beats and flow of the song. Some also said how ‘Jennie’ and ‘Rani’ have an uncanny ring to it. This gave rise to plagiarism claims against Jennie. A section of X users also expressed their disbelief over the claims. “The funniest thing about this whole Jennie/Alia debate is that, we Indians were shocked that for once it was someone else who stole from Pritam and wasn’t him stealing the music. And Alia had nothing to do with the music other than walking with her back looking like THAT,” wrote one user.
While Pritam has finally issued a statement, Jennie has yet to react to the claims.
