Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath took to social media to congratulate his brother, Nithin Kamath, on winning the EY Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) 2024 award. Nithin was selected by a ten-member jury for his groundbreaking contributions to the brokerage industry, introducing a low-margin, high-volume model that reshaped the market. His achievement is even more remarkable, as he built Zerodha into a billion-dollar company without any external investment.

Following Nithin’s prestigious win, a proud Nikhil shared a heartfelt message along with a picture of Nithin and his wife, Seema Patil, on Instagram.

“Congratulations, brother. You deserve this and every other award out there. To both you and Seema—after losing our father, surviving cancer, and a brain stroke—your resilience and unwavering smiles deserve another kind of award altogether. In a world filled with glass-half-empty people, we need more glass-half-full,” Nikhil wrote.

As the recipient of the esteemed award, Nithin Kamath has the opportunity to represent India at the EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award (WEOY), slated to be held in Monte Carlo in June this year. His stock-broking company Zerodha has supported several fintech and climate-focused start-ups besides taking up various initiatives for the welfare of society.

After winning the EOY award, the Zerodha CEO said, “This feels truly special. As an entrepreneur, I often ask myself ‘what’s more important – market cycle or business skills?’ And usually the answer is market cycle. I started trading 27 years ago and it eventually led to the founding of Zerodha. The idea was simple – offer low-cost broking, a stable platform and transparent services.”

Nithin was hit by an ischemic stroke in February last year. Due to reduced blood supply to the brain, the 45-year-old entrepreneur was unable to read or write. His facial muscles also got weakened by the condition. Meanwhile, Seema Patil is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and required ten months of treatment to recover.
