A 26-year-old man took back the spare key of his apartment from his mother after she entered without prior notice. He also asked her to leave the apartment as she let herself in unannounced and interrupted a private moment with his girlfriend. Sharing his story on Reddit, the man said he was having an intimate moment with his girlfriend when his mother, who was supposed to come after 4 pm, showed up two hours early with the spare key, which she has for emergencies.

He said his mother started shouting his name when she realised what was happening and started saying things like, “I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING IN THERE” and “HAVE SOME RESPECT!” He further added, “She started yelling at me about how it was disgusting and inappropriate to be doing that while guests are over.”

The man said his mother also accused him of having no manners and even told his partner to feel ashamed. This led the girlfriend to immediately grab her key and leave the place.

Frustrated by her mother’s behaviour, he asked her to leave. “I ended up arguing with my mom for 10 more minutes before telling her to leave and return the spare key. She refused at first, but I stood my ground until she finally handed it over. She left in a huff and later texted me saying she was deeply disappointed in how I spoke to her,” he said.

He further asserted, “Now, my dad and sister are both telling me I was too harsh and that I “shouldn’t have put her in that situation.” I argued that she put herself in that situation by showing up unannounced and barging into my home.”

The post gained widespread attention and quickly went viral with people supporting him.

One of the users wrote, “You gave your mother a set time to visit, and she disregarded it. Besides, what you do in your own house is none of her business.”

Another commented, “She’s acting like you’re still a kid. Ur 26, not 16. She needs to learn boundaries, and your dad and sis need to back you up.”

A user also wrote, “Had a similar situation happen with my mom, and I had to set boundaries. I’m 28 now and she still thinks she can pop in uninvited. She didn’t like it when I told her to stop, but it’s my space!”

“I get that people are either gonna show up early or show up late, but if you set boundaries about WHAT TIME you should come over, if you come over early you do NOT have the right to tell others what they can and cannot be doing,” somebody else mentioned.

A similar incident happened some time ago when a 36-year-old woman shared her frustration on Reddit about her mother repeatedly entering her home unannounced using a spare key.
