Actress-turned-politician Divya Spandana, known professionally as Ramya, has explained why Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency failed to leave a mark at the box office. Released in January this year, the film hardly earned Rs 23 crore in India despite getting mixed reviews from all.

Ramya mentioned that even though Kangana is a “talented” actress, Emergency was a badly made movie. “Emergency was a badly made film. Kangana Ranaut is a very talented actress and it has nothing to do with her as a person. But that movie was bad and that is why the audience rejected it. Kangana also made Manikarnika and that was a hit because the content was good and the audience liked it,” Ramya said during a panel discussion at the Bengaluru International Film Festival, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Emergency stars Kangana Ranaut as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The actress not just plays the lead in the film but also directed it. The film explores the 21-month Emergency imposed by Gandhi, from 1975 to 1977, often referred to as the darkest chapter of independent India.

Besides Ranaut, Emergency also stars Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi.

Emergency received mixed reviews from all. News18 Showsha also gave the film a 3-star rating. “While Emergency ambitiously spans multiple events, its structure leaves much to be desired. The first half feels stretched, while the post-interval portions seem rushed. Scenes like Gandhi’s self-comparison to an old devil feel distasteful and unnecessary,” a part of our review read.

“What elevates the film is its casting. Kangana Ranaut’s portrayal of Indira Gandhi is nuanced and commendable. Her meticulous attention to Gandhi’s mannerisms and demeanour showcases her acting prowess, reaffirming why she’s regarded as one of the most talented actresses in the industry,” it added.
