New Zealand suffered a big blow in the second innings of their Champions Trophy final against India in Dubai. The experienced Kane Williamson will not take the field due to an injury he sustained while batting earlier in the summit clash.
According to a report by PTI, Williamson will not take the field after sustaining a quadriceps injury while batting earlier.
Williamson is the most experienced campaigner in the New Zealand setup, and the captain, Mitchell Santner, would have benefitted from having to fall back on his experience. The veteran was not able to get going with the bat as he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav in the 13th over of the innings. Williamson hit it straight at the bowler, who made no mistake with the catch.
In the tournament, he scored a total of 200 runs in the five games he played at an average of 40. He was New Zealand’s best batter during the group-stage clash in Dubai, where he hit a valiant 81 off 120 balls.
Despite the top-order not being able to get a big score, the middle-order managed to mount a late charge as Daryl Mitchell’s slow-paced fifty and Michael Bracewell’s unbeaten 53 off 40 balls ensured that the Kiwis set a target of 252.
Mark Chapman will step in his place as the substitute fielder.
Coming to the second innings, the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, gave the Men in Blue the perfect start to their chase. Shubman Gill, on the other hand, has taken a more cautious approach when batting in the first couple of overs.
Rohit seems to be in fine form with the bat and looks set to get a big score on the board with his aggressive intent on display. Before the eighth over itself, Rohit has hammered four boundaries and three sixes so far.
