Chennaiyin FC closed out a forgettable season with a come-from-behind 5-2 win over Jamshedpur FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.
While the majority of the cricket-loving nation remained glued to the telly to witness the national cricket side clinch the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Chennai rallied back from a goal deficit as strikes from Lukas Brambilla, Daniel Chukwu Chima, and Irfan Yadwad overturned a Rei Tachikawa opener. Sanan Mohammed added a second-half strike for the men of steel, which ultimately proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Yadwad and Chukwu Chima doubled their tally in the final knockings of the game.
Chennaiyin’s season of underperformance, reflected in the dwindling attendance in the stands, took an early hit as they went to a Tachikawa rifle that sent a bulge in the back of the net as CFC failed to clear their lines from a corner in the 17th minute of the game.
The hosts had a chance to level four minutes later as they were awarded a free kick from a dangerous position, which Brambilla operated with wit. The Brazilian looked to strike the set piece low and around the defence, but Gomes caught on early and sprung to his left to keep it out.
Jamshedpur nearly doubled their lead in the 24th but for a flying save from Mitra to keep the home team and its fans interested in the game. And the Blues made the most of the momentum the save injected as they broke on a quick counter, which Chukwu Chima finished off with assurance after the wrong-footed defender laid it onto him.
CFC nearly inched ahead as Brambilla made the keeper look foolish with a deft touch in trademark samba fashion, only to hit it straight at a lurking defender.
Brambilla continued to demonstrate his flair with highlight-reel-worthy moves on the flank before seeing a shot blocked. Elishno stood tall at the other end of the pitch as he came up with a goal line clearance to deny Sanan after the ball fell to him on the back of some woeful defensive play from the hosts.
Brambilla, who had been troubling JFC’s back line with his quick feet, was at it again, and this time, he made it count as he sidestepped Uvais before striking one sweetly into the far corner to give his side the lead in first-half stoppage time.
Jamshedpur has a renewed sense of attack about them after the break, but the hosts withstood the questions the men of steel posed before Irfan Yadwad netted CFC’s third of the day as he tapped it in past an onrushing Gomes after being put through on target by Farukh Choudhary.
Sanan cut the arrears on the back of some intricate link-up play down the right from Barla and Jordan David Murray as the forward pummeled one past Mitra from point blank range.
Yadwad doubled his tally before Chukwu Chima followed in added time to clinch the win and finish off 11th in the table with 27 points to their name.
