India will face New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025. The Black Caps booked a place in the title decider on Wednesday (March 5) by getting the better of South Africa in the second semifinal played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The Kiwis rode on centuries from Rachin Ravindra (108) and Kane Williamson (102) to post a total of 362 runs for the loss of six wickets in 50 overs. And in reply, Proteas could only manage to score 312 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 50 overs.
After securing a big win over the South African team, the Kiwis will look to take revenge for the defeat in the Group A match against India on Sunday (March 9) in the summit clash.
Ahead of the final of the Champions Trophy 2025, here’s a look at India’s record against New Zealand in ICC finals:
2000 Champions Trophy
India faced New Zealand in the final of the 2000 Champions Trophy at Gymkhana Club Ground in Nairobi on October 15, 2000. Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming won the toss in the match and invited India to bat first, after which, riding on captain Sourav Ganguly’s 117 and Sachin Tendulkar’s 69, Men in Blue posted a total of 264 runs for the loss of six wickets in 50 overs. But the 266-run target didn’t prove to be enough against the Black Caps, and despite getting off to a forgetful start, they managed to chase it down in 49.4 overs for the loss of six wickets. All-rounder Chris Cairns played an unbeaten knock of 102 runs from 113 balls after coming out to bat at No. 5, and Chris Harris scored 46 runs from 72 balls. The duo added 122 runs for the sixth wicket to crush India’s hopes.
2021 World Test Championship
The final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship (2019-21) was played between India and New Zealand at The Rose Bowl Stadium in Southampton from June 18 to 23. In the rain-hit match, India suffered a shocking defeat by 8 wickets under Virat Kohli’s leadership. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and invited India to bat first.
New Zealand pacer made full use of the overcast conditions, and Kyle Jamieson picked up 5 wickets for 31 runs, and Trent Boult and Neil Wagner picked up two wickets each to dismiss the Indian team for just 217 runs in the first innings.
Kiwis, despite opener Devon Conway’s 54 and Williamson’s 49, also could only manage to score 249 runs in the first innings, but Indian batters failed to show up in the second innings once again and got bowled out for 170 runs in 73 overs. The Kiwis were asked to chase down 139 runs in the fourth innings of the match, and they rode on Williamson’s unbeaten 52 and Ross Taylor’s 47 to reach the total for the loss of just two wickets in 45.5 overs.
In addition to the two finals, India and New Zealand have faced each other two times in the semifinal of the ODI World Cup and managed to win one match each.
In the last ICC knockout match (semifinal) played between India and New Zealand, India hammered the Black Caps by 70 runs at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15, 2023, and qualified for the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
