Ace Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced her pregnancy, as she expects her first child with her husband and fellow wrestler, Somvir Rathee. Vinesh, 30, conveyed the good news through her official Instagram account.
Having retired from wrestling after heartbreak at the Paris Olympics last year, Vinesh has since joined politics, contesting in the 2024 Haryana Legislative Assembly election for Congress.
Vinesh and Rathee had got married seven years back. ‘Our love story continues with a new chapter,” the star India wrestler wrote with a little foot and heart emoji.
Fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik led the way with their congratulatory replies to the good news.
In the first round of the Paris Olympics, Vinesh beat reigning Olympic and world champion Yui Susaki of Japan, who hadn’t conceded a single point to an opponent in the Tokyo Olympics.
The encounter was an edge-of-the-seat affair, with Susaki leading 2-0 through two penalty points until the last few seconds when Vinesh took her down and scored an upset victory over the Japanese.
Vinesh defeated Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarters and Yusneylys Guzman of Cuba in the semis by points to qualify for the summit showdown.
What came as a major heartbreak next for Vinesh and the country’s Paris Olympics aspirations was that she was later disqualified for being above the stipulated weight during the weigh-in on the morning of the finals.
Following her disqualification, Vinesh announced that she had appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Vinesh had demanded that she be awarded the joint silver in the event as she was within the legal weight limits during the first day of the bout. She announced her retirement from wrestling with immediate effect as well.
Upon her return to the country, Vinesh got a grand welcome led by Congress leader Deepender Hooda, besides a roadshow from the IGI Airport in New Delhi to her village in Haryana.
Vinesh was felicitated by the Haryana khap panchayat, a local farmer-based community organisation, and many supporters requested her to join politics, to which she complied.
