Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat New Zealand by four wickets on Sunday (March 9) to win the Champions Trophy 2025 final. In the match played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Rohit top-scored for the Men in Blue by scoring 76 runs from 83 balls. During his stay at the crease, the 37-year-old right-handed batter hammered seven fours and three sixes.
India’s win in the final helped Rohit Sharma become the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC trophies.
Dhoni was the captain of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013. Rohit, on the other hand, has won the T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025 titles as India captain.
Only five captains in the world have won multiple ICC titles so far. West Indies great Clive Lloyd was the first one to achieve the feat. Under his leadership, West Indies won ODI World Cup titles in 1975 and 1979.
Ponting led Australia to ODI World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007 and Champions Trophy wins in 2006 and 2009.
Dhoni joined the legendary list in 2011, and Australia’s Pat Cummins won two ICC titles (World Test Championship and ODI World Cup) in 2023.
After Rohit led India to the Champions Trophy 2025 title win, ICC took to X to share pictures of Rohit posing for photos with the Champions Trophy.
For his superb show with the bat in the summit clash, Rohit won the Player of the Match award. He is the first captain in the world to win the POTM award in the Champions Trophy final. Overall, only four captains have won the POTM award in ICC finals.
Lloyd was the first one to achieve the feat. In the 1975 ODI World Cup, he scored 102 runs for the West Indies against Australia and also picked up one wicket.
Ponting joined the elite list by scoring 140 runs against India in the 2003 ODI World Cup final. Dhoni also won the POTM award in the 2011 ODI World Cup final for scoring an unbeaten 91 runs from 79 balls against the Sri Lankan team at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2, 2011.
