Spain’s left-back Marc Cucurella has said that it would be a disappointment if Chelsea do not go on to win the UEFA Conference League, backing his team to lift their maiden title in the tournament.
Chelsea have been strong since the UEFA Conference League started and resume their bid to lift the title on Thursday night in the first leg of their last-16 encounter away to FC Copenhagen.
Head coach Enzo Maresca has added more strength to the team, which topped the group phase with a 100% record, by including England midfielder Cole Palmer for the knockouts.
“Yes for sure, 100 per cent. We are a top club and Chelsea have players with a lot of skills and abilities. We need to feel that we can win the competition, to believe that we are ready and can do it,” Cucurella was quoted as saying by The Athletic.
Cucurella joined from Brighton three years ago, but the closest the team have come to success since he arrived was when they finished as runners-up in the Carabao Cup and semifinalists in the FA Cup last season.
“It is very important to win a trophy because we can show we are doing things well. Last season, we had two opportunities, and we failed,” Cucurella said.
“This season, we have another opportunity, and we are ready and hungry to do it. We want to do it well, and we can show the project and the ideas the manager brings and the ambition of the players,” Cucurella added.
Meanwhile, Maresca is ready to deploy Palmer in the tournament in a sign of just how the London club are taking the UEFA Conference League.
It is a sign of Chelsea’s relative decline that they are involved in the UEFA Conference League only four years after being crowned champions of Europe for the second time in their history.
But with Chelsea a huge 21 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, Maresca has taken a strong team with him to Denmark for Thursday’s last 16 first leg away to Superliga leaders Copenhagen.
After Thursday’s match, Chelsea will play Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday, March 9, at Stamford Bridge.
