Calvin Harris is venturing into new musical territory with his upcoming song, Smoke the Pain Away, which carries a country-inspired vibe. Known for his iconic dance tracks, the Scottish producer surprised fans with a sneak peek, showcasing him singing and playing the acoustic guitar. This marks a departure from his usual style and serves as his first solo release since Free, his collaboration with Ellie Goulding. Fans are eager to hear the new track, and his wife, BBC Radio 1 presenter Vick Hope, showed her excitement by cheering for him in the comments section.
Sitting on a chair and playing the guitar, Harris sings, “Eyes sparkle like sun in June, grow up and wait for you. Wide awake in a hotel room, thinking, ‘Oh, what I could do.’ Too late, I’ve been up for days. I can’t even see straight. No, I can’t smoke the pain away.”
Sharing the track on Instagram, Calvin Harris kept the caption simple, as he wrote, “SMOKE THE PAIN AWAY. It’s coming.” Reacting to the announcement, his wife, Vick Hope wrote, “Those vocals, YEEEESSSSS.”
Vick Hope has always been Calvin Harris’ biggest supporter since they began dating in 2022. When Harris won Best Dance Act at the 2024 Brit Awards, she was overjoyed and proudly celebrated his achievement.
Speaking about his win, Hope in an interview with Brits’ YouTube channel said, “You know that award didn’t exist for so many years. I think it did and then it was gone for a bit and then it came back. I would say like 2011 to 2015, like it just wasn’t there. It wasn’t there and that was peak. It would have been the time. So I think maybe we could like post dates, a bunch of Awards as well.”
Calvin Harris isn’t the first EDM artist to venture into country music. Avicii famously fused the two genres with Wake Me Up in 2013, and Diplo later launched a country project under his real name, Thomas Wesley. Now, with Smoke the Pain Away, fans are eagerly anticipating its release and speculating whether this is a one-time experiment or the beginning of a new musical direction for Harris.
