In what has come as a major blow to Mumbai Indians’ aspirations of putting up a better performance in IPL 2025 than 2024, ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah might miss the first two weeks of the tournament, according to a report in The Times of India.

According to the report, Bumrah may miss the first week or two of the Indian Premier League and might join the Mumbai camp only next month.

Bumrah is rehabilitating at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru after being ruled out of the Champions Trophy because of a lower back injury.

“Bumrah’s medical reports are okay. He has resumed bowling at the CoE. However, it is unlikely he’ll be able to bowl at the start of the IPL in another fortnight. As per current status, the first week of April looks a more realistic date for him to get back to high-intensity cricket,” a BCCI source told The Times of India.

In that case, Bumrah might miss the first three or four games for the Mumbai Indians. According to the report, he still has not begun bowling full tilt.

“It’s standard operating procedure. The medical team will gradually build up his workload and intensity. Unless he can bowl full tilt without any discomfort for some days, the medical team is unlikely to clear him,” the source said.

The report adds that Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mayank Yadav will also join the camp next month, which means he will miss out on four games as well.

After IPL ends on May 25, India will travel to England in mid-June for a five-Test series, which begins June 20. The eventual target is to ensure that Bumrah is fit for all five Tests.

With so much uncertainty on Rohit Sharma continuing beyond the Champions Trophy, Bumrah is being touted as the next Test skipper.

According to the report, with the India pacer and Mohammed Shami prone to injuries, the selectors do not want to plan the full tour around the latter and Bumrah.

“How Shami and Bumrah endure the long IPL will be important. Shami is under constant watch. If the selectors get both of them together for two-three Tests, it will be the ideal situation,” sources told The Times of India.
